“Debrecen has been a stronghold of natural science research for hundreds of years. Thanks to this center, we can gather together the changes related to the living world, and explore their causes and consequences. Our task is to connect, examine and coordinate ecological and nature conservation research and activities in the region. We also consider it important for people to be aware of the special environment they live in, and we would also like to start a program in which our experts visit different schools and present the work that is going on in our center.” - Tamás Székely

Shalini presents the significance of wetlands as important breeding grounds in India in Malaysia

14 December 2023

On 14-15 December 2023, Shalini presented her 2022-2023 fieldwork observations in the 28th Biological Science Graduate Congress (BSGC) at the Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. Read about her presentation here.

Motivated by the support of their supervisors, Shalini participated to enhance her confidence in public speaking, learn about current research in Life Sciences across countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines, and engage with professors and fellow students for idea exchange. The conference, hosted by the University of Malaya, featured oral and poster presentations. The conference days were filled with keynote sessions, parallel presentations, and cultural events, culminating in a Gala Dinner showcasing diverse cultural performances.

She highlights that the Q&A session after her talk focused on the methods used for recording breeding waterbirds and the study's aims, providing valuable feedback. Shalini, eager to share insights from wetland and waterbird ecology, hopes for more emphasis on animal behavior and ecology in future conferences.

Mándi Mihály, a student under Dr. Balázs Vági, had the opportunity to participate in the TDK conference at the University of Debrecen. The University TDK awarded him 2nd place for his presentation and essay on his project: VertBrainData, a database of brain measurements across vertebrates. This database includes brain size data for 6444 vertebrate species. During the presentation, he emphasized its potential applications, with a focus on parental care research. This work is part of the ongoing efforts of the Tamás Székely Lab to understand the proximate causes of reproductive strategies.
